Whenever I'm in a grocery store, I go out of my way to get the "store brand" of an item that could be made from common store ingredients, such as chili or frozen burritos.

My rationale for this is that the big name chili companies know how to make their ingredients as cheap as possible, whereas the store probably just takes ingredients they were going to throw out anyway. The result is that the store brand tastes way better.

I have nothing to back this up with, nor any desire to find something to that effect, but isn't a lot of "store brand" stuff just the "brand" stuff repackaged?

I definitely remember Hearing This Somewhere, thought it might have been from a racist aunt or similarly problematic family member.

It's possible, but I feel like most of it is different in noticeable ways. Like, store brand oreos won't have the same printed cookie pattern.

Also, you can make a fairly convincing Fake Cobbler by putting frozen fruit in a bowl, sprinkling instant oatmeal on top, and putting it in the microwave for a few minutes.

Like Alex, I have no source for this, but I always think of it as there being a big relish factory somewhere, where the same relish gets poured into various containers with different brand labels and then sent out and sold at different price points. The occasional relish that obviously tastes different can be explained as being a weird small-scale operation that refuses to use the same relish vats as everyone else.

This is how I think of most products, like brands of makeup or breeds of dogs.
