I think I may have brought this up before, but:

http://www.terrorisland.net/strips/001.html
http://www.requestcomics.com/comic/1.html

Odd little coincidence.

The reason so many of Ben's strips are about food is because food is something we all care about.

I'm not seeing the coincidence. Is it just that all of those are photocomics?

It's true. Food is one of those 'cultural constants', like death, snakes and hair styling.

Those aren't just so many of Ben's strips.

Each one of those is an initial strip.

Unless you're an immortal robot, in which case you don't eat, you don't die, you don't have snakes and you don't style hair.

I like to deal with various themes over the course of different strips, but they need to start out with something identifiable for the readers. I'm not sure what other than desiring food would work for that.

So you start with a desire for food to provide a sort of foundation of acceptance ("Hey, this guy needs food too! Now I feel I understand all of his motives and behaviours!") on which you string more complex things ("This guy builds robots, how weird! But he eats food too, so he's still a pretty normal kind of guy who I can empathise with") until eventually you seamlessly end up far from the initial premise ("Wow, this guy who I totally feel for for reasons that I have forgotten is doing some crazy stuff.")?

Clarification: I do not think building robots is weird.

When you try for that approach but rush things, it can end up as "This guy used to be all about buying food, but now he's building robots! Food Follies totally jumped the shark."
