Terror Island #143

I love this new feature.

Actually I don't even know what strip 143 is, I just picked a random number and will find out once I submit this post.

given how many strips we have, its lucky that the number randomly selected was in the appropriate range.

Imagine if you'd gotten 3^^^^^^3.

That is indeed an interesting new feature. I suppose it's all for the best that it happened to result in a strip featuring The Green Grocer.

I intentionally picked a number less than 200, so it wasn't entirely random.

Otherwise there'd be no guarantee that I'd even pick a rational number, or a real number.

Specificially, an integer in the range [1,200).

You should set it up to work for Request Comics as well. Also, you should set it up to not need a leading zero.

So I know I'm normally all joking about the requesting that people stay on topic, but for serious, when it comes to this thread, if I see new posts, I get all excited that new posters have joined the forum and are sharing how they came across Terror Island.

Then I get my heart broken.

Fixed the heartbreak with a threadsplit.

I'll probably get around to putting in Request Comics tags soon. The leading zeroes thing is trickier — I don't have much programmatic ability when it comes to controlling how this works. It's basically just a matter of typing in the HTML that will replace the tag, with slots where the number you provide gets inserted.

Have lewis make 99 redirects then.

If it's written in C, you could ask William for help, I think he knows C ;-)

i think there is also a barrier to how much you can control how the tags work, given the BBcode admin interface.

I'm pretty sure phpBB is written in a language whose letters are part of the phrase phpBB.

And I do not use that language.

The interface for making new BBCodes is really just straightforward string replacement.

Code:
[ti-cite]{NUMBER}[/ti-cite]
becomes
Code:
<a href="http://www.terrorisland.net/strips/{NUMBER}.html">Terror Island #{NUMBER}</a>

Could you do {number}{number}{number} for more than one number?

I guess it's more of a convenience than a necessity.

What would the other two number variables do?

This really is just string replacement. As far as I know, there's no construct for conditionals like "if {NUMBER1}<100" and such.

No, the result of the BBCode tag is just a string of text with tokens inserted. The tokens can be things like {NUMBER} and {URL}. As far as I know, there's no way to get {NUMBERPADDEDTOTHREEDIGITSWITHLEADINGZEROES}.

You should ask the phpBB people to add that tag.
