This is an email I got a few days ago, from Chenjesu's parents. I'm listed in the "To:" list as "Jim's Friend 1", which amuses me.
GREETING FROM THE EDITOR (DAVE)
HOWDY Friends and Family!!! We're finally getting mail from Jim--er, Elder Richter. He sent snail-mail Sunday, Oct. 12, then email on Wednesday. We were overjoyed to discover he hadn't vanished into the vortex. For those who don't know, he is heading to the Vancouver, Canada mission on October 29.

JIM'S SNAIL MAIL
Dear Mom and Dad, Hi! I am starting to get adjusted to the MTC (Missionary Training Center). ... really busy ... my district is really from space ... teachers are really good ... easy to talk to ... Brother Dixon is an amazing scriptorian. I've been blessed with a great companion. He is like Matt, but [less] outgoing.
It is so weird having a companion, having someone everywhere you go. I think it will be better in the field because ... it will be a lot more like real life where we can make decisions about where to go, whereas right now it's just "go here" and "go there" and we know what we're doing already so we don't have anything to talk about. Things are great, though, and all is well. Thanks for praying for me. I have been blessed with the Spirit and also more time to learn the things I need to. Have a wonderful time at home! I hope your back is alright, Dad. I still love you both and Matt and Emily too.
The snow started up yesterday, that was pretty neat. Not much snow on the ground but snow in the air. Tell Grandma and Becky and Ray and Jim and John I am doing well.
See you all later!

To:
richters@frontiernet.netOkay, so I chose
elderrichtertheyounger@myldsmail.net as my e-mail address which was the coolest thing I could think of and hopefully it's not too long. This keyboard is kind of rough so I am typing slower than I normally do so this message might not be very long.
Thank you Mom for the letters and also to Matt and Emily. I am glad Matt and Emily are working hard because I am doing the same. I am going to a lot of meetings and taking a lot of notes, and I am also studying a lot but sometimes I have fun too. My companion is kind of silly but I like him and he is not lazy which is good.
This might seem strange but can you send me the lyrics to "edelweiss" because I had that song going through my head last night and I want to sing it.
Yeah, so Matt and Emily used a service called dearelder.com which was pretty from space, you can send same-day letters but it is not like a handwriting letter, they just type it up and give it to me. I think you can also send packages at a discount but I don't need any packages right now because my roommates just left yesterday and they left us a lot of food they got in packages. I haven't even eaten any of it yet though because the dining is p. good here and I eat a lot of it. Also, mom, thank you for the bookmark, I will definitely use it and I think it will inspire me as I pioneer the wilderness of BC.
My district is really good, I'm lucky. There's no crazy people in it. There is a really (crazy) outgoing person in another district .. his eyes bug out all the time and he is boistrous. He's nice from what I have talked with him but he is just too much for me. But my district is really chill. They like to have fun and make jokes and stuff and a lot of them are pretty funny. But they all have faith in the church and they are hardworking.
There are a lot of good talks here. I went to a devotional where Richard G. Scott came by and it was really good and had a lot of good advice. I took pretty careful notes and I might send some things he said back home.
Also, mom, you can always give me advice. That goes for dad, too.
Also. This morning there was a mouse in our dorm room. It was pretty strange, I will have to come up with a way to trap him or something. Hopefully he doesn't eat all of our food, I checked and didn't find any food that he ate so I think he was just passing through (I found him under my bed and there is no food under my bed) so hopefully I don't get any more. I live on the 4th floor so I don't know how he got all the way up there.
I bought a copy of Jesus the Christ and a small hymnal and am reading Jesus the Christ I am not very far through I am on the chapter "The Need for a Redeemer" but I left your copy at home so you can read along with me if you want
I am almost out of time but I just want to say that I love you Mom and Dad and Matt and Emily and all of the rest of you and I am doing well
love you all!
