seriously though, I am moving from LA to Detroit in a few weeks. after that, I will be in a better time-zone for collaboration, and also I will have more ability to actually participate in the writing and whatnot.

Yeah, I was kind of getting a please-wait-until-Detroit vibe off of you the other night.

Hey so who is doing/hosting the website for it?

(I volunteer because I need the practice.)

I do not object to you doing the webstuff.

So I think basically what you're going to do is make a text file called .htaccess (if you don't have one already)
put it in the root of your site, so the tallcomics.com folder or whatever
and then fill it up with stuff like this

Code:
Redirect 301 http://www.tallcomics.com/index.php?strip_id=26 http://tallcomics.com/?id=17

I think that's the format. First URL is the old one and second is the new one of course.

I did this, and it doesn't seem to be working. :\

Gonna look up how it is supposed to be formatted, because if it is a problem with the format, then I just have to find and replace some stuff hopefully.

Hm. You put this in a file called .htaccess in the root? I thought that was what the syntax was.

Possibilities I see:
- That is not the syntax
- Your server doesn't run Apache but instead runs IIS or something
- Some other goofy thing

I have checked, and it does run Apache.

Looking up the syntax again.

Oh hey
I think maybe the path is the issue...

Quote:
Redirect /home/USERNAME/yourdomain.com/path/to/old/file/old.html http://www.yourdomain.com/new/file/new.html
The first path to the old file must be a local UNIX path. The second path to the new file can be a local UNIX path, but can also be a full URL to link to a page on a different server.
Here are a few examples of some redirects:
Redirect /index.html /new/
Redirect /index.html /default.html
Redirect /private/ http://www.anotherdomain.com/private/
Redirect /img/logo.gif http://www.photos.net/images/logo.gif

You pre-empted me posting pretty much exactly the same thing.

Let's see if this works...

Think I am going to worry about this ~tomorrow~ though, because I am starting to feel a bit terrible.

You need to have

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine ON

before the redirects

but

The other major problem is that get variables are funky. In particular they do not seem to be interpreted directly... like if you say redirect index.php/?strip=3 the rewrite engine only sees index.php

There is probably a way to do it in the htaccess file but it might be much easier to do it as a php redirect.

You could also do it in php without a "formal" redirect where if you see the variable strip_id it would assign id to whatever is appropriate. The downside is that the url would not change.

I hope this helps and does not just confuse the matter more :) :howard:

Yeah I was worried about whether the params on index.php would actually get picked up.

I'm not sure a PHP redirect is as good for your google juices as an Apache redirect
but really who cares, if it works it'll be good for people trying to find you

Meanwhile, we're up to fifty different randomized pictures for the archive/about page.

OK I have consulted all the geekiest people I know and it looks like changing both the variable name and the variable value is impossible via the .htaccess file. It's not great, but what you could do in php is look for the strip_id variable and if it exists (re)define the id variable to whatever is appropriate.

I can help more if you'd like to share your code with me ;)

OK, um, I don't really know anything about the PHP stuff, so I don't know which ones of these files you will need, but I will just send you a bunch of stuff, and you can see what you can do with it I guess.

What system are you using now instead of iStrip?

ComicCMS

I would say that it is a little bit better in some ways.

Probably worse in other ways.

Looking at the docs for ComicCMS, the templating system sounds a lot like iStrip. You probably just need to set up your feed template to output the basic XML tags for RSS and stick in he variables like strip title and whatever.

To-do list:
~Once the site is located in the proper place~
Go fix all the links at TV Tropes again
Get Google Analytics on there
Get Project Wonderful adspace on there
Figure out RSS stuff
Figure out S.E.O. stuff
Turn 404 error page into something that will be at least slightly helpful for bros who clicked old links
add some more store-ad images in a random rotation so that it doesn't start to feel like that shoe ad is an actual part of the layout.

~Also important~
launch long-in-the-works comic with Ben and Lewis
Bring back the Too Far archive, with the crappy Deep Space U stuff separate from the good stuff

~Extremely low priority~
Build a new Your Guess is as Good as Mine site
Add even more random logos for the About and Archive pages.

I'm sure this will be very low priority, but the latest comic looks weird on my iPad. It's small and you can't really zoom in, it just gets pixelly. The other comics look fine, and this one looks fine on my Mac, so I don't know what the deal is... Maybe if you saved it in a different way or something?

My friend who has an iPad has had the same problem with several of the comics in the archive. No idea what the deal is, but it seems to afflict taller strips most, which sucks, because the only way I've figured out to fix it is to use PNGs, which obviously are larger in filesize. I realize that a lot of people have iPads these days for some reason, so I should really try to accommodate.

If you get some time, maybe you can go through with the iPad and see which ones give you trouble, if there are any others?

Hmm, yeah. Those are definitely all the tallest ones, so that's definitely the problem here. Shoot.

OK, I will do something about it.
