OK, so I got my domain working, and immediately set the directory to home/user/epparker.com/tallcomics to see if that would work. I was disappointed with the results (it seemed like it was just being treated as a redirect) so I changed the directory to home/user/tallcomics.com. Since the site has too many static links (or possibly links that are generated by a PHP thing based on where the site is originally installed) I basically re-installed the site software at tallcomics.com, and uploaded all the comic files and page layouts over there, leaving everything else the same.

But it seems like it's taking a long time for the domain change to take effect, so tallcomics.com still seems to lead to epparker.com/tallcomics.

I think that this will just sort itself out over time. I talked to the Dreamhost support dudes, though, and they said that tallcomics.com was "totally" loading from home/user/tallcomics.com, so whatever. If it's still doing this in a couple of days, I'll complain some more.

If anyone sees the word "Superior" appear in the menu with the site links near the top, let me know right away. I put that there as a quick way to identify the relocated site.

Apocalyptus Comics are up again in their own little hastily constructed area:

http://tallcomics.com/apocalyptus/page1.html

I am in the uncomfortable position of wanting to do some better Apocalyptus comics sometime, and not wanting to continue that story.

To-do list:
~Once the site is located in the proper place~
Go fix all the links at TV Tropes again
Get Google Analytics on there
Get Project Wonderful adspace on there
Figure out RSS stuff
Figure out S.E.O. stuff
Turn 404 error page into something that will be at least slightly helpful for bros who clicked old links

~Also important~
launch long-in-the-works comic with Ben and Lewis

~Extremely low priority~
Build a new Your Guess is as Good as Mine site
Ideally all the metafiction spinoff things should have their own little sites, aside from Powerup Comics, where the comments are the real draw.

Man, what the heck what is this problem

Ugh

Why has it started looking for the images at tallcomics.com/tallcomics rather than epparker.com/tallcomics?

Uuuugh.

Hmm, it seems to be working again now at least.

I have no idea what I changed, aside from adding a link to the Apocalyptus comics, but reverting to an older version of the site worked.

When I go to tallcomics.com, the comic nav links go to places like http://epparker.com/tallcomics/?id=1 and then it throws a 404

Seems like a configuration issue in your site software maybe?

It's being completely crazy for me! I'm clicking back through the archive, and half the time it says "tallcomics.com/?id=x" and half the time it says "epparker.com/tallcomics/?id=x"

Also, half the time they try to load images from "http://epparker.com/tallcomics/img/comic/x.jpg" and half the time they try to load from "http://tallcomics.com/tallcomics/img/comic/x.jpg", which doesn't work. This doesn't seem to be tied to which page url loads.

Probably going to leave it until the domain is in the right place though, because I have no idea what's going on in the other copy of the site, which I presently don't even know how to reach.

I have made this all needlessly complicated for myself!

My! Is there anything left to do?

And uh...I am...not sure what the favicon is! Unwinder being eaten by a partially submerged fish?

Added kind of a pointless line to the "So what is Unwinder's Tall Comics all about?" section of the about page, just because I really didn't like how the headline kind of lined up with one of the headlines in the sidebar.

Pretty excited about this. You might ask, how can you be excited for something that isn't here yet? The truth is I'm not actually excited.

Added a bunch more crazy variations to the random logo rotation on the archive and about pages!

Whoa, on Project Wonderful I put the anime tag on my ad box because there is often anime stuff in it, and now all these anime bros are falling over each other to advertise there.

Hey Miles

What kind of stuff do I have to know in order to set up those redirects?

The numbers are indeed not the same as they used to be, because I removed the Apocalyptus comics from the archive.

It seems like all old links currently lead to the index for some reason.

They all lead to the index because every page is actually the index and the index serves different content when you give it a number. But if it's a number (or other thing) it doesn't know it just does its default thing.

Or something like that.

What you need to know is how to make an .htaccess file (assuming your hosting is apache and not IIS, which I think it is on dreamhost)
I think since you probably won't be able to write a rule to tell it how to redirect
e.g. strip_id=32 should become id=32
since you can't do that, you may have to just do individual redirects for every page
which isn't horrible, but will be annoying and take a while

So I think basically what you're going to do is make a text file called .htaccess (if you don't have one already)
put it in the root of your site, so the tallcomics.com folder or whatever
and then fill it up with stuff like this

Code:
Redirect 301 http://www.tallcomics.com/index.php?strip_id=26 http://tallcomics.com/?id=17

I think that's the format. First URL is the old one and second is the new one of course.

unwinder, are we supposed to be generating buzz about our comic?

Is it safe to mention that it may or may not involve [trade secrets redacted]?
